According to vastu shastra, staircases must be built in the South (Dakshin) or West (Paschim) direction of the house. Both these directions are lucky (as per vastu) and is said to bring good health and prosperity for the people staying in the house.

Also, note that the stairs should begin from the North (Uttar) towards the South (Dakshin) or East (Purva) towards the West (Paschim). In case where there is a lack of space, the directional turn of the stairs can be taken into the other sides as long as the general direction of the staircase is intact and correct.

For an external staircase (outside house), it can be built in the South-East direction (facing the East), in the South-West direction (facing the West), in North-West direction (facing the North), and South-West direction (facing the South).

The stairs must always be an odd number. It must never end with a zero number. According to vastu, stairs should have an odd number of steps – 9, 11, 15 and 21 are considered the most auspicious for the home or office.
