The mountain is located near Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal, close to the source of some of the longest Asian rivers: the Indus; Sutlej; Brahmaputra; and Karnali.

Lord Shiva should always face in the North direction. Because it is the favorite direction of Lord Shiva and Mount Kailasha, his abode is in this direction. Placing picture of Lord Shiva in this direction gives auspicious results. North East is known as Ishan in Vastu Shastra and is considered as the ideal direction for a pooja room.

Make note that never place the picture of Lord Shiva near the end of the bed or under stairs. Also do not keep the Dancing Shiva or Natraja form of Lord Shiva in home.
